WebThe “true” hamstrings include three separate muscles: semitendinosus, the semimembranosus, and the long head of biceps femoris. What distinguishes these muscles from other muscles or portions of muscles that function alongside them, is that the hamstrings cross both the knee and hip joints. In human anatomy, a hamstring is any one of the three posterior thigh muscles in between the hip and the knee (from medial to lateral: semimembranosus, semitendinosus and biceps femoris). The hamstrings are susceptible to injury. In quadrupeds, the hamstring is the single large tendon found behind the knee or comparable area.
