How do we detect cosmic rays
WebOct 8, 2024 · Galactic Cosmic Radiation (GCR) is a dominant source of radiation that must be dealt with aboard current spacecraft and future space missions within our solar system. GCR comes from outside the solar system but primarily from within our Milky Way galaxy. WebCosmic rays are particles that are constantly crashing into the Earth from space. When they hit Earth’s atmosphere, they release a shower of less massive particles, many of which invisibly rain down to us. When a cosmic ray zips through a cloud, it creates ghostly particle tracks that are visible to the naked eye.

WebHigh-energy cosmic rays are so rare, though, that it would be impossible to lift into space a detector big enough to capture a significant number of them, so we must find ways to detect them at the earth's surface. When cosmic ray particles strike the earth's atmosphere, collisions with air molecules initiate cascades of secondary particles.
WebThe very high-energy cosmic rays generate huge showers of up to 10 billion secondary particles or more, which can be picked up by particle detectors when they are spread over areas as large as 20 square kilometres on the …
